I mainly deal with crossheads in the vertical plane. Looking at that one you don't have forced lubrication so that will add extra wear too both bearing surfaces. I'd say the top one will wear as some load from the piston, conrod and crank are going too be transfered into it. But the bottom one will wear faster as it has the weight of the components under gravity resting on it plus lateral forces from the con rod and crank and piston. I do believe you could quite easily remove the top bearing surface and the engine would still run, you will lose some efficiency but it would still work.
