Since our regime change I have noticed an increase in enquiries in my line of work, are some people feeling more confident in the future?

My suspicion is that people on higher incomes are relieved that yet again the workers have been kicked in the financial ballocks, and are more relaxed regards self indulgent purchases.

yea its allways the indians that suffer never the chiefs the country s still in the sh///../t and will be for a long time. ive noticed a large drop in working for the public never in 10 years have i been short of work but have been the last 2 month . im fortunate now got a lot of work in a school to do and other jobs coming off but most havent

don't count on coming out of the recession , the usa are starting to admit they are in a depression and are expecting the market to drop this back end . also the u.k main stream news said our government is expecting a double dip recession . the only reason the market looks better is because we issued more currency = paper money . gold is about $1400 oz because people have invested in gold because they have no faith in government bonds and paper money . youtube Gerald celente and listen to him , he is an independent political atheist and the worlds number one trends expert . he writes the trends journal in the usa . the u.k always follows the usa in economics . the usa is bankrupt and owes china and Russia billions and the federal reserve ( secret usa government ) wont tell the American citizens where the missing trillions of dollars went too . they wont allow an audit either . why do you think Kennedy was shot ? he was going to sort them out . you listen to Gerald celente , you will cirtainly learn something . sell your shares if you have any .

Agreed! The UK economy is a hollow shell, the cracks are just starting to appear. We are completely bankrupt, we just don't know it yet!

you get more enquiries because people are ringing round for the best possible price instead of just going with the first quote times are hard.

now if your work load matched the increased enquiries that would be a different matter

Another thing to be careful of is companies who have run out of credit with their traditional suppliers and are looking around for new suppliers who will give them credit.
Then when you start to chase the money after 30, 45 or whatever days the excuses start, following by a dead phone ! Be careful out there !

Work is on the up, from hardly any to enough to get by on, so an improvement, might be unrelated to the regime change; but it feels better.

I am at times I think fortunate that I rarely deal with companies, my sales are all direct to the public, making bespoke items, this means that I get paid up front. For small orders I ask for full prepayment for larger orders I ask for 50%.

I have mates who also work to commssion and have them end up stuffed with one off works from orders that people have pulled out of. A real bummer.

This company is 20% short of its targets, first time it's failed by a margin like that.
But the owner is still pootling about in his Aston/Merc ML/Chrysler/whatever.

Chap next door says business is 'really bad'. But then bought a Cayenne (what a godawful thing). Kept a few months and bought a Boxster. One man's hard times is another's er.. something or other.

Those two chaps in charge make a lovely couple though.

Those who spend recklessly on the folly that is new cars will be regretting it then !
And I do speak from experience, although no where near retiring, I worked for many years in our family business, now closed, and look back in shame at the money squandered on nice, shiny, flashy, new cars and the running costs. Oh how I wished I'd driven around in a cheap, previously owned diesel and instead invested in my retirement fund !
Well never again, if the opportunity ever comes my way !

Looks like your shiny new cars did at least give you some dubious pleasure .. father in law has seen his pension scheme payments to him cut to almost 1/3 of what it was 10 yrs ago . His financial investments over the last 40 years are in tatters .
He is now one of the most miserable beggers I know, for not only was he as tight as the ducks proverbial rear end ..it being water tight, he turned down buying a LS LOwery that was going for £280 back in 1974.

He never missed an opportunity to miss an opportunity .

Anything with paper money only values is going to be exceedingly shaky for not just the next 30 years it is going to go on for centuries in the Western World as it declines & the new empires and world leaders arise out of the Asian and other Eastern continents due to their massive populations and bowl of rice a day cheap labour economies and globalism in markets.

Think more of " useful land and bricks and mortar " for people to live in but keep your rents cheap so that you alwys have full occupancy

( Welsh Gov are looking to legally & forcibly take over empty properties then shove in " socially in need people ) ...suspect it will be compulsory purchase scheme or on more likely a mimimum rent to the owner scheme.

We are still busy, not daft busy as of next week (thank god!), but lots ready to do, and quite a few jobs looking hopeful of winning. Keeping everyone busy so here's hoping.
Most of our suppliers seem busy/busier again now.

Pension plans do advise that the investment can go down as well as up.
You can take the money out and re-invest in alternative's.

Chunko - you're an artist, I'm in the arts. So that's me up the swannee then. The funds have been committed for the next couple of years, but after that, nada. It's going to be like the 80s for us.

will things ever return to what we called normal i dont think so we will adapt, scrimp & save to get by and that will be our normal until something worse comes along and it will more red tape from europe like the low emission zone in london although its is proposed that it will be defered for the white van man and similar sized vehicles until 2012 it will still put people out of work that cant afford a new vehicle im sick to death of europe and the way they dictate to us lets get rid

Snooper, you're right it's a pain, but it's not an EU instruction, it's an initiative by the Mayor of London (Ken started it, Boris wants to keep it). If you're going to be anti EU, you could at least get your facts right.
What the EU wants is for air quality in London (which is the worst in the UK and amongst the worst in Europe) to be improved. Fair enough, surely? Not that you should care as you don't live there.
