late 70's a Yamaha DT100

DT125E Twin shock with extra coils in the generator to form a starter motor.
Never imported to the UK.
We had one in for breaking at CentaBike but the starter gennie had burnt out windings

Can you give some more info on the equipment you have?
The Lister Start 'O' Matics have a combined generator/starter, the starter side is usually 24v D/C.
The system was designed as a source of 'on demand ' power, primarily lighting, for a house or building. It was a stand alone system prior to mains electricity being available not intended to be linked with a grid supply.
When the plant was not running & no lights required, all switches off, the batteries could monitor the 240v side and when it detected continuity (light switched on) it would start the generator.
The load on the 240v was then monitored and when it ceased, everything switched off, the plant shut down and then reverted to monitoring with the batteries again.
All battery charging was done during the lighting demand period.

Ran one of those startomatics for years, relied on the decompressor being deployed until enough engine speed was built up, they didn't just start like they had a starter motor.

On mine its about 208v.

They vary by manufacturer and the hybrid range, most are 'mild' hybrids and 48V. One of the reasons for choosing 48V (apart from reducing the conductor CSA) was the ability to work on them without any special precautions, the low/high changeover point for vehicle electrics - I know mains is completely different is 50VDC.
Above 50VDC, you'll have all those pretty orange cables and intrinsically safe connectors with all the certification and safety requirements that go with them - AKA a right PITA

From what I can glean, and remember I’m not a spark, I’m an engine man! The starter drives through a current sensing relay. As the amps drop in relation to rpm rising, and therefore notice effort reducing, the relay drops out at a set point, say 50% of sustain rpm.

This then connects a shunt connecting the now generator to the charging circuit. Follow me for more terrible descriptions of electrical systems!

Are you referring to newer start-o-matic systems here, asking on an interested level not questioning your knowledge!, as the older (first 5hp CS engine SOM's with the direct drive alternator were called lighting plants and supplied was it 110v to a battery bank for lighting then following on from them we have the 6 hp CS engine which had the 24v battery for starting with the load sensing circuit, these are obviously early models in the SOM era and the later air cooled versions were taken into play subsequently.

Yes, it was rare to see the older big upright w/c 750rpm singles with the big dangerous flywheels by the 90's (there were still a few, but I never saw any with battery systems).
The ones we tended to see were the S Series air-cooled singles, twins and triples from the 70's with a wall-mounted S-O-M panel.

Yes that's the one! I couldn't recall fir sure if it was the 100or 125.
Are you certain they never came to the UK? As a schoolkid I saw one several times locally.

My 1974 Yamaha RD200 had the dynastart system fitted, worked fine.

Now you mention it, a mate had an RD200 - I'd forgotten about that one!

Err yes, It should be MW, but the capaitals are only caps because thay are names, like V, A,W,..kVA, kW, kV..
