lenth of a cable run to be able me to run a good welder would cost a masive amount due to the lenth of run of the cable

I needed 65m of 10.0mm² 3 core armoured to get to my garage, couldn't get an off cut that long so I bought a 100m reel, the cost of the cable was insignificant compared to what the rest of the garage cost.

Talk to your neighbours because in My experience not many can visualise what you're going to build and always think it's going to ruin their outlook.

One trick I've used is to get some long tile batten and stick up a box outline of your build, if the roof is pitched stick two gables up to show the height, this need only take a couple of hours to do and often calms neighbours fears, works well with dormers as well.

Be truthful and be sure to stick to that size or things will go badly!

a flat roof would be cheaper and less work and would also have less of an impact on the neighbours. The new one ply rubber roofing is dead easy even for a diyer and if done right length of service shouldn't be of any great concern. It really is so much better than traditional torch on felt.
you wouldn't have any storage space though.
looks like some of the neighbours have garages so a precedent has been set on any planning front

Pitched roofs evolved over centuries because if a fault develops rain tends to run off harmlessly whereas a flat roof failing (which it will given time) is not only very hard to fault find (*), but leaking water inevitably ends up inside.

(* water runs inside the structure, and where you see it emerge may be a long way from where it is entering)

My roof is 19mm Sterling board supported by 4x2's crossing 9x3's, covered with a single layer of felt as a short term measure then box profile sheets over the top. Nice and dry with no leaks and there is space between the timbers to place celotex etc. if you want insulation. The fall is 1 concrete (breeze block) difference in height (9 inches) across the 15ft width.

its about 500.00 + so more like 600 for the fibre glass grp roofing materials then you need the sheets underneath and the beams so its probably more than just roofing it with slate or even felting it

felt should be the cheapest option but 10 years or if done by roofmans way much longer

slate roof 70 years

Get a Firestone rubber kit. Board to give a smooth surface, glue it down, trim around edge, job done. Did my single garage on my own.
