Stainless steel?

OK after doing the washing up after lunch today , I used a magnet on the stainless steel stuff we have in the kitchen and some stuff was magnetic and somestuff was'nt I'm confused ,.....surely if its steel it's a ferrous metal so it's magnetic ....jeff....

As you found out, some stainless is magnetic some isn't. Makes a big difference at the scrapyard, non-magnetic stainless fetches more cash!

It's all down to the microstructure.
Some 'stainlesses' have an austenitic grain structure, some don't.

Austenitic stainless grades ('real' stainless) aren't magnetic.

And just to confuse some are slightly magnetic and get more magnetic if you bend them...........so a sink for example could be non magnetic on the drainer but the corners of the sink could be magnetic

That could also be because many of us used to weld in the sinks corner to corner on commercial kitchen jobs then clean them up so they looked like press formed (gosh the re-graining and polishing was a thankless mind numbing task afterwards)

Alter the amount of carbon, nickel, molybdenum, etc etc what stainless qualities do you end up if. Brings back those college days. brittle, ductil, tough, hard, weldability, machinability, corrosion resistance oh not forgetting is it magnetic.

I was using a sink as an example purely because its press formed and the sink part is worked harder than the rest.......I have no idea what used to happen on the jobs you describe.

Well I knew I had asked the right folk for this little question ...so it seems nothing is quite what you think it is ...so the three types of stainless steel contain iron but not always enought to make them magnetic ,thanks guys ...jeff

All stainless contain Iron and over 12% (ish) Chromium........its the Nickel thats added that affects the magnetic properties
just 12% Cr its Ferritic
up it to 18% + a bit of Carbon....Martensitic
add 9% Nickel.....austenitic
up the Cr and reduce the Ni.........duplex

and then it gets complicated

yes it could.......I was just explaining why I mentioned sinks
