stainless steel wool supplier? and under seal advice!

hi there just been all round town looking for the stuff to clean underseal residue off and no one seems to keep it, anyone know anywhere in northern ireland that stocks it or can anyone supply me some?

i am scraping under seal off with a heat gun and scraper then gona clean up whats left with white spirit and stainless wool, as i am afraid of normal steel woll starting more rust lol, is this the best method?

I can't see any objection to using ordinary wire wool: you'll have to give it a good wipe with a cloth (and something a bit more effective than white spirit, maybe petrol, spirit wipe, or acetone) before you paint it anyway.

Alternatives are scotchbrite pads (ordinary kitchen ones, but not the foam backed ones) or -- in the £1 section in ASDA -- stainless steel pan scourers (blister pack of 6).

You can buy stainless wire wool @ £30 or so a kilo: it's used to pack silencers. Ebay usually has some, or Google for a supplier.

I used a combination of nitromors with a scraper, blowtorch with a scraper and an angle grinder. As far as I can tell, there is no easy way to remove the crud.

I wouldn't worry about using ordianary wire wool - it's not a problem for contaminating mild steel as it's made of the same stuff. Stainless wire wool would be better for stainless and aluminium. I buy stainless stuff from millner offroad (at the bottom of the page just £15 per kg.)

No easy way at all. Heat gun seems to be the thing for the bulk of it. Don't recall what I used for the dregs, but white spirit could work, otherwise thinners or the magic "glue and tar remover" you can get from paintshops could be worth a shot.

no worries guys its just the way when it lays about it goes rusty fast! but suppose its a dry garage so should be fine just dont wana encourage the rust worm! dad has tons so ill be robbing him tonight. I hear that gunk stuff works well ill have a go with it!

I found cellulose thinners the best for getting underseal residue off, it's much better than white spirit - but make sure you have very good ventilation or you get pretty high and wear gloves if you value your fingers.

It's best to get it from an auto paint supplier - considerably cheaper to buy it by the 5 litre can than 500ml at Halfrauds.

What about the curly wire pan scourers.... i think they must be cheap stainless....?

I wouldnt be concerned about using normal wire wool though.

The £1 for 6 asda ones are. Even labelled as "stainless steel scourers". Nothing like as sharp as wire wool, so more pleasant to use, but less effective in extremis.

cheers guys ill call at the paint place tomorrow and ill just use normal steel wool if it cuts the mustard better.

If it`s anything like the stuff they use as soundproofing inside, diesel would be your best bet. Why not go half way with each and soak the wire wool in diesel/acetone/cellulose thinners. Or what about one of the paint removal wheels for angle grinders (not a wire one) I`m sure there are other brands, but i`ve used the Oakey ones with good results, they do quite a coarse one, they don`t clog up too bad (but they will fly apart if you snag them)
