Stainless steel shafts scrap value?

i have two stainless steel shafts (old boat prop shafts) I aquired in a deal a few years ago, I've never found any use for it and am trying to have a tidy up

They are approx 10ft long and 2 1/2" diameter, and I was told they are 316. I was going to keep a couple of feet of it for future use but am struggling to find a use for it.

Does stainless have a scrap value and is it worth weighing it in?

If its good clean bar, you could probably sell it on ebay, perhaps by the foot. Probably yield you more than scrap value. 316 is usually worth a bit more if you can prove its all 316, if not, it may well just be put down as stainless steel....hang on to it for a couple of months and it'll be worth a little more i'd expect.

If its 18-8 stainless steel solids then its £650 per 1000kg nationally so you would get a little less locally as they need a margin.

When i last weighed in stainless (non-magnetic) i think i got 800/tonne at emr, but scrap is lower now. There's a website called 'letsrecycle' that will give you a rough idea (but probably loose 10% on the prices mentioned there)

I'm almost certain it's 316 as they have sat outside for ten years plus an are still spotless. I'll have to hav a measure up and think what to do with them, they owe me a certain amount, I got them for messing around with my lathe myself but have not even managed to use one bit so far!

Would also take a tidy length off you if it came up for sale, and could be posted.

If they are prop shafts, they should be pretty true. A long length of true bar is worth a lot more in one piece!

I think that most boat shafts are 316, I go to a local scrap yard where they often have boat shafts and they sell those at about $4.50/Kg and buy at $1.00/Kg, so it's a nice money earner for them, I think that you would get more for them if you sold them privately as a complete length or as smaller offcuts as a lot of machinists would use them for projects and such.
