Could any one tell me if there is a problem with welding 308 stainless steal wire to 304s/s and 430s/s .As i have a quote for work and Im looking for addvice. Thanks mick
304L and 308L are virtually the same so thats not really an issue, use 308L wire. The 430 to 304L can also be done using 308L but usually 309L is used. If its only thin the 430 can be welded as is but if its over about 6-8mm thick its best to preheat to about 150oC.
If its just a case of sticking the two together you could possobly dispense with the preheat. You might start to embrittle the HAZ on the 430 but its probably acceptable. There is a post weld heat treatment you can apply to soften the HAZ but I doubt you will need to.
