Don't think i'll be buying any bags of fifty, i only need a couple, gav i'll measure them when i get my box of bits back from the hydraulic place - thanks for the offer!

The guy behind the counter said the tapered seal with the recessed step inside was probably too specific to find an off the shelf equivalent but i left the bits with him so he can rummage. fingers crossed.

I had a similar task looking for some seals for a Bradbury trolley jack pump. They were available in a kit for the complete jack at £47 + delivery but all I need is two small rubber seals so I put some O rings in for the time being and it works.

More time spent going backwards.

Three different companies had the seals for a week and no joy, have a feeling it wasn't a priority for them some how! So i picked up 5 litres of 32 weight hydraulic oil and proceeded to rebuild, unsurprizingly the whole system must be full of air because there's no pressure build up at all, should it be self bleeding or is there a trick to this? The filler cap (which i believe needs to be loose when pumping?) took a litre but i can't see an additional bleed point?

There is also an adjuster screw under the large allen cap bolt in the middle, adjusts the strength of the pump somehow?

Help please, if i don't get this cooking i'm going to have to donate 50 quid to HSS this weekend to rent exactly the same tool to get the job done

edit, forget that, stripped it again and ive killed one of the tapered seals, damn my hamfistedness...

anyone with a hydraulic bender in london i can come and use, i have the tube & former...

I've got two but I'm in Horsham West Sussex. There is a small slotted screw that is at the other end of the reservoir to the filler. I always remove this when filling to let air out.

The seals look very much like brake slave cylinder seals. could be worth looking at classic car/truck brake parts suppliers as they will have imperial sizes and may do single parts. Note when taking your mesurements, messure the bore that the seal is running in not the worn seal! Same with the ID of the seal, mesure the pin/shaft it's on. If imperial then usually a round figure. Looking at your vernier reading 19.xx mm is prob 3/4" ect. There must be a company out there that services the larger garage jacks ?

i went round in circles trying to get fix the ram on an old engine crane. that had seals like the thick tapered ones you have pictured.

does the ram have some special features? cant you just pinch one out of a trolley jack?

but if not the ram dimensions of this type of thing mean that hydraulic repair places generally wont be able to help.

Why wouldn't a hydraulic repair place be the place to take a hydraulic ram to be repaired I would have thought it the obvious place to start looking. I'd also try agricultural engineers if a company cant help ask if they can recomend anyone else to try.

Engineer is correct in saying that rotary bearing seals are inappropriate for hydraulics.

To state the bleeding obvious , they are designed for low/no pressure rotary sealing whereas hydraulic seals are for High pressure linear.

If you fit a rotary seal it will initially seal , as pressure increases it will deform, wear rapidly & then fail , causing damage to ram & often with catastrophic results. .

In an earlier response to the OP it was suggested he got seals from a bearing supplier. These people generally only supply rotary seals, which are quite different to hydraulic seals. For anyone unsure about seals this site provides some useful info: http://www.ahpseals.com/

There is also much confusion over the type of seals required for motorcycle front forks, and these while looking exactly the same as a common or garden rotary shaft seal of the type sold by bearing suppliers, are designed for operation at far higher pressures: http://www.blue-diamond.co.uk/press/press1.html

Hi, I may be wrong, but I think Tubela engineering bought out the last company to own Staffa bending. Their number is 01371859100, ask for john, I think he told me they had some seal kits in stock for the staffa machines

thanks pal, gave them a bell and they do have seal replacement kits for the round body staffa benders(not a bargain at £88 inc vat) but i will be purchasing when funds permit. Funny enough i phoned them last month about a tube notcher, if only they put the seal kits on their crazy website!
