idle question for a saturday night...

i've been reading the "spring for vise grips" thread, and mention was made of ordering by wire size, and length.

is any spring, of a given length + thickness the same "strength"? within a reasonable closeness?

No....very complex are springs.....when I was at Hempel we made spring wire.....theres a Trade and Research Centre in Sheffield and many of the manufacturers are out in Lancashire.

thats what i surmised, based on weeks of "young's modulus" calculations in my murky past.
(physics/maths was friday morning at 9am. college was a 90 minutes bus ride from home - but timing meant it had to be the 630 bus.

not *too* bad. but the Florence Nightingale pub near Jimmys hospital had happy hour for trainee nurses on a Thursday evening

Wire thickness, diameter, number of working coils, if they're the same the spring will be about the same rate, give or take, given almost every spring is steel with a similar modulus.

They use lots of different grades of stainless as well as plain carbon steel

i remember (uni work) calculating tension of a spring with variable diameter and wire thickness.
"calculus of partial differentials" - i *much* preferred happy hour in tbe "florrie", but i was married by then...

I think Poisson's ration comes into it as well as young's modulus, plus ofc all the dimensions. Look up Wahl's factor too.

I am planning to.

But if I can buy one, I can charge a customer( add it to the invoice)

It will also give me another place what can or could supply parts for the dead tools at MIS.
