Spraying the Vette.

I think I need.to paint our DILLIGAF. it's the last thing that's bugging me now.
So I good with paint and where to donit. Just the spray gun now and which touse for obvious e off job. Well i hope its a one off unless I cock it up lol.
This is the gun if have

I have only used it one the chassis and small jobs in the past.
It's.a.Clarke one but unsure of the model

Would.this be good enough for the job or better to get a gravity gun. I don't mind spending around £100 if need be.

This is the reason I want to paint it.

Bubbles galore

I rattle canned the nose with the paint i got on a colour match which is the bad. 3 coats and two lacquer.

I need to line the gargae out ans eal it all to keep dust down aswell. And choose a good weekend for temperatures.

Be good to faff spraying s bigger job than normal.

It depends on your air supply and what you intend to paint. Low end, a Fast Mover FMT3006 if you have low capacity air and don't need a mask fed too. If you have a super dooper compressor, then the world is your lobster. Look at FLG5 which are not expensive and the Devillbis GPi. Spraygunsdirect.co.uk is worth looking at.

The FMT3006 LVLP has been mentioned before ( do we have mole here on commission?? ), I brought one and am waiting for some warm dry days before I try it. I might be waiting a while

thought this was a good deal £15 for a 2.2mm sealey primer gun , should hose thick primers on a treat and almost disposable at that price

Are air caps and needles fairly standard, so you can buy spares and change the sizes?
I've got a few generic/nobrand paint guns I'd like to use but not sure the caps etc are right for what I want to spray.
Im probably going to buy one of those fast movers since they are so cheap.

You can buy a Fast Mover kit with 1.3 and 1.8 nozzles.

One thing not mentioned yet is the construction of the car.

I presume your vette has fibreglass panels or maybe even all fibreglass body?

My uncle has a classic vette that was restored some years back and we specifically sought out a bodyshop with experience in fibreglass repaints at the time.

Ani F160 would be a good full size gun. I use their smaller R150 mini gun. I wouldnt bother with fast mover but there are some good copy clone guns that may be worth trying. R500 for example on amazon/ebay.

I think you have to add a plasticiser to paint that is going onto a flexible surface.
One of the causes of bubbling is water in your air supply so take care of that happening.
I think one of our car painters could offer better advice than me. I just can't remember who they are?

Its all GRP. This is a project for me and really lookig forward to having a go myself. all that can go wrong is it needs doing again. And also saving around £6k if it goes ok. Majority is prep work. Its no a show room car more a daily driver so doesnt have to be perfect just better than it is.

Totally depends what kind of quality of finish your after ( DIY. / Pro.?). Options have expanded enormously since the era of the gun in your pic.. I'd say see what the gunman ( pro refinisher) says on YouTube for a start. But you also need specific treatment to correct your bubbling (common on glass as you know) - follow the pros recommendations for that but I would have thought barrier coats and correct humidity (even in prep) are key

Bubbles could be caused by pin holes in the gel coat being sanded into on prep.

Anything like mine, bubbles caused by the internal lining of a carcoon dropping, sitting on the roof, and holding moisture against it, unseen from outside.

Paint had been fine for a few years until then.

But also take a look here for moisture in the GRP causing the problem - and it won't go away without proper work:

Nope, not nowadays.

The other reason is not drying out the substrate properly and using non waterproof paints what absorb moisture.

Indeed, fibreglass preparation is a complex and long job. When I was working, my estimate before seeing any full respray was £7k and went up from there. I am doing my Middlebridge currently and am already over 50 hours in, on the prep.

Exactly right....good prep is to oven bake once current finish is stripped off (or leave outside on a blisteringly hot summer day and get back inside before temps cool down)....

I thought that was the name of the gun. Seems good price. What is the difference between that and say a clarke/.achi e mart gun.

As fornthe bubbles. It's a common thing on these and other cars in GRP. Even metal cars can find it happen.
Damp air,surface. Not prepped correctly etc etc.
All i have is my clarke garage and will be lined out and once the car is stripped back to bare then it will be left for a week or so in good temps to dry out what ever is there.
