Spray gun

Hi all, I am venturing into repainting my landrover , prep is ongoing, in the past I have hand painted one, this time I want to have a go at spraying my current landy , what would be a decent spray gun that would run off my 1.5hp 25l compressor , will be rigging a basic water trap system as per the "paint" guide on here , As this is likely to be the one and only time of doing this would like a decent gun at an affordable price, so any recommendations as to make and model please , the paint is most likely to be a spray able coach enamel , plus the primer for it , hopefully spraying the primer will allow me to practice enough to stop making a pigs ear of it ,

I would very much appreciate some pictures and comments as you go along. I have previously brush painted coach enamel but my results weren't as good as I was hoping for

One thing I have found is that enamel chips and scratches easily even after months of drying so probably not the best finish for a landrover unless that is a problem with the brush process but I doubt this

I used the Tractol/Tekaloid paints from Smith and Allen in case that makes a difference

The Smiths and allen paint is what's on there now , don't know what other paint I could use as a simple one pack ,

tractol is a nice enamel and fast drying hand or sprayed

Without knowing the cfm of the compressor you have I would have thought you are going to be looking for an LVLP spraygun or a small spraygun that doesn’t require much air to operate efficiently.

HVLP gravity gun running at about 30psi would do it panel by panel as long as you let it catch up now and then. Don't use too fast thinner so you can keep the wet edge while you are refilling the gun or if you stop on a big panel to let the compressor catch up. I brush painted a Transit pickup in enamel and it was going badly till I added about 10% white spirit and gave it a good stir. The cab looked so good no-one would believe it was not sprayed.

I well may end up doing it by brush and roller ,googling spray guns has left me confused

Have a look at the Fast Mover guns. They do a very good kit which may be the FMT3006. LVLP so uses little air and overspray is minimal. They are not expensive either.

I upgraded to a 50 litre and used a devilbis hvlp for doing my Landy, worked great stuff. Then I decided to nix the lot and raptor it

Primer is often thicker, wanting a 1.7mm'ish nozzle.

For base/top coat you'd usually want a 1.2-1.4mm nozzle. Im no expert on that, but you can get away with a 1.2-1.4mm for primer with more thinners..

Id recommend the Ani F160, bigger version of the mini R150 I have. They are quite good on air use, not as thirsty as HVLP guns. Spares are not too expensive so you can get a nozzle kit for primer and use one gun fir both. The cheaper version F1/N shares the same casting but with a lower quality nozzle, works out about the same but with a spare pot and gun. I did this with the R150 and GF3.
