Sounds a bit daft, but if the 'nugget' of weld coheres on each side of the crack, and the 'nuggets' overlap, might that not be worth a go ?
Possibly even in cast iron.....

The problem is, if you tried to overlap spot welds you would encounter something called "shunting" where some of the current will pass through the previous weld reducing its effectiveness, rule of thumb is to space the welds at least 3 times the diameter of the electrode.

Yep, that'd make sense.
Unlikely that it's a target to be easily sniped....
