spot welder arms

Hi i am trying to find some where to buy some copper bar to make 750mm long arms for my spot welder.
If any one can point me in the right direction i would be very great full..

Hi, welcome to the forum, arms that long would have to be a reasonable diameter to stop them flexing under pressure, commercial ones are normally cast profiles to stop flexing.

Aalco,and Rightons are the first two suppliers to spring to mind.Can`t remember if Richard Austin does copper or not.
You don`t say if it a portable spot welder or a floor standing machine.Most use brass for the arms and copper for the electrodes only.It`s a special copper,berrilyium I think.
Best place is to look in Yellow pages for alloy or non ferrous headings.

Its a Tecna 3 phase one I was only thinking copper as thats what it has got on it now. Would it have to be special brass as i have a machine shop next door to me that might be able to do that for me..

We use a very helpful company based in Coventry, called Jaymig Engineering. Peter Brown is the man there. They make all sorts of stuff and are good on spot welding tips/arms/holders. He will probably supply raw material to you but can also make things quickly if you fax him a drawing.

The portable one I have has several sets of pure copper arms, forged ones from a floor standing machine and a few sets of 1" diam copper rod arms, I gather they work, I haven't ever tried them. The bloke the welder belongs to had a set of brass arms he made so he could spot weld the centre of a mini floor!
I bought copper tips, the arms are all taper reamed for the proper tips, from buck and hickman.

I`m not sure if there is a spec for the brass on these arms.
Try searching for the manufacturers of spot welders,projection welders and resistance welders to see if their sites have any info.
The most common one that I remember was Skiaky and there was was a Federal something or other.Whether they have survived or not I don`t know,it`s a long time since I was involved with it although I have a machine here.

Edit: It was British Federal but their website has been closed so nothing there.

Sciaky and British Federal supplied most of the equipment for Longbridge, Sciaky are still going and British Federal seem to have disappeared, but controls side is now BF Entron

Hi, sorry to drag up an old post but I've just picked up an 11 KVA handheld spot welder with standard 120mm short arms. Has anyone been successful in making some arms from copper or brass rod?

I'm after 300mm length, approx 20mm thick? Could I bend this easily enough?

I'm thinking square section perhaps for rigidity?

Any suggestions appreciated, I'd love to hear some success stories.

You can buy arms in machine mart. They were too big a diameter to fit my spot welder but I modified them to fit.

Instead of trying to bend the arms, why not drill holes perpendicular to the bar to fit the tip holders?

Mirafloriman, I'm trying to do this on a budget and don't wish to pay retail prices, thanks for the suggestion though.

Robotstar5, I should have said, the bends are to bypass obstacles, I will be drilling the arms and using off the shelf electrodes.

Look up AALCO they have reasonable prices for metals or did a few months ago, they can get most materials for you .
If you anneal the bars you might be able to use a 1" or 3/4 " pipe bender to get the shape
