Hi ,,, I bought a MIG spool gun and adapter set to use with my Thermal-Arc GTS130 TIG inverter with 0.6mm steel MIG wire.
I was horrified that the MIG tip is permanently live and not switched by the trigger ...only the spool feed and gas valve are operated by the spool gun trigger switch. So I have adapted an Albright 200A DC contactor to suitably switch the welding current by taking a signal from the gas valve. I am now getting decent results Question is, should I sequence the gas and wire feeds with the weld current switching? I am an electronics engineer so I can design a suitable control circuit. Should I have gas pre-flow and at what point should I operate the wire feed and weld current? Also should I have gas post-flow and what sequencing on turning off the wire feed and weld current is ideal?
This is the link to the adapter but as far as I know Draper tools sell the same unit in different enclosure for nearly double the price.
I messaged Draper in the UK telling them that I think the permanently live torch feature is a safety hazard plus it's described as '240v' but has no mains input, it gets power from the main welding supply. They have put it to their tech people this week and I am waiting for a reply.
