Split exhaust

Hi, I just posted about the welding on the back of my transit and I thought I would ask about this aswell. Basically as you can see in the picture my exhaust has corroded severly and has split off from the silencer box

Is it possible to weld a sleeve onto this atall or if I tried welding onto the silencer it would just blow through?

I was thinking it would not be possible and I would have to replace the whole rear of the exhaust but would it be ok to get something like FE651C in this and cut the the exhaust in between the silencers and but weld the two together with the help of some exhaust putty.

If the stub is too weak/rusty, i have done it before by making a thick round/oval plate, with a hole in the middle and weld it around the lip of the box, then sleeve the pipe and weld to hole in plate.
Only trouble some of the boxes can be a bitch to weld to.

Replace it with a new one, exhausts aren't worth messing about with and any repair there will soon fail again.
FE651 fits inside FE811 and the joint is clamped. No welding required.

Im with Wozzaaah, thats what i would do now.
But i have done some of my own and other peoples when i have been skint.

If you are good with a MIG set that can be repaired pretty easily. You will need a short length of exhaust tube the same dia as the corroded piece, cut out the rotten section with 1mm cutting disc, clean up the ends of the old parts back to good metal, cut your repair section so it fits perfectly, then weld it in. In general the box itself will be OK, and just the connection point at the end rotted, so if your repair is well done it should last quite a while.

There's so much rust that once you cleaned back to good metal you will have a pile of rust and no exhaust.

Welding up an exhaust is ok for a small hole, but for all the hassle you'd be better off with a new one.

I can't see any join on my exhaust though, its just a straight through pipe :/

It's probably the original one then, you'll have to replace both sections or make up a sleeve.
Don't weld it or you'll make it difficult to replace the rear section when it goes.

On a rotten old van which may or may not get through the next MOT, its simply not worth fitting new exhaust parts, when the existing one can be easily repaired for very little.

Old, rotten exhausts never weld well and almost always fail again soon after, why mess about with it when a replacement is quick, simple and won't break the bank?

Trouble is that I am worried that I might blow through the box when welding it, anything that may help me avoid that?

That section I can get for £40ish but then making some sort of sleeve or doing the whole thing will then cost more.

Other option being that I go to a scrappy and try to find a half decent one and put that on for the time being?

just do away with the front box cut the flange off use a piece of straight pipe to sleeve over the front pipe and over the rear pipe then weld or clamp for a bit of pipe exhaust fitting place ask to have a look in the skip and make sure you clean it up well it's a pain to weld but can be done better if you gas weld braze it the tranny wont miss one exhaust box and it's not a test failure either if you get 6 months out of it we have all been skint i still am so you have to make do and mend Partco used to sell exhaust pipe in straight

Repairing an exhaust is not really a job for beginners, but is pretty easy for anyone with a bit of experience. All you need for this repair is about a foot of exhaust tube the same dia as original pipe..........you should be able to get this FOC from the scrap skip at your nearest exhaust place.

ive welded that section on a few transitis and the pipe has always cleaned up ok close to the silencer then just butt weld som new pipe on is is worth doing if the silencer is the original ford one as they well outlast the cheaper ones in fact i have replaced the exhausts on our vans because the pipes had gone not the silencers
you can also get a full system for under £100 but not gennuine

Thats quite right..............a genuine Ford exhaust box with a properly done repair will outlast cheap new replacement parts.
