a common issue i get is the end of a thread damaged, and that being the case it is almost impossible to get a die to start in exactly the right place, so im more likely to destroy the thread rather than repair it.
i am aware there are thread repair tools such as this
that will do the job very well but i dont like the £120+ price tag and the large amount of area around the affected fixing. can you get dies that are in two halves, you put the over a unaffected thread section then undo them with a wrench until off the bolt to clean the threads perfectly? i managed this yesterday in a pinch by snapping a normal die in half(rather than cutting it which would remove material), but this is less than ideal, obviously.
