I have never had a problem with scothlocks inside the car on good multistranded cable i.e. grater then 1mm sqd, would never use them outside as they would corrode. soldering is good but can make the cable brittle as copper does not like being heated above 90 deg C it changes the composition of the metal. the other method would be an inline crimp, but you need to make sure the bare copper is crimped and no the insulation, and you need to used the correct tool for the crimp. if doing outside i.e. underneath the car then it has to be really well sealed as it is subject to salt water spray etc
