fine tune, decent earth and check the wire feed isnt too high, just a little can make a diff

Hi, we use the same sort of power and gas. You will get spatter, its the co2 that dose it. You can reduce the amount but there is always a cost. Less co2 less side wall penetration (not good). Cored wire, more expensive. Anti spatter, hydrogen in the weld (not good if hi strength steels). We just spend some time and knock it off. It may make sense to employ a labourer rather than have a skilled man using his time. How much is O.K is a how long is a piece of string question. If the job is going on show ,then none. If its a job like a crusher going on a demolition job right away then I wouldn't get to fussy.

If you are welding in dip transfer and your machine has more than one socket for the earth connection this will alter the inductance, try it in a different earth sockets.

If you are welding thicker material and you can do it using spray tansfer you will be able to tune the spatter out completely

Yep, spray is the way to go (if the metal thickness allows you to) it would be around 23 24 volts...(23,4 if my memory's correct) and about 200 amps!
Can you fine tune your kit in negative and positive numbers?

so thiers no way i can get splatter free welds above 22volts use short circuit transfer probaly because i'm on the edge of globular transfer right?

You want to try and avoid globular transfer like the plague, dip or spray are the way to go

You might try a lower voltage and bigger wire.

Spatter can some times be put down to the quality of the wire. If the drawing lube is not cleaned properly prior to copper coating you will get spatter. In dip transfer you will get some spatter purely because the wire short circuits in the weld pool. Your gas mixture sounds a little strange. 5 % co2 in argon is good for dip. The quality of your machine and the settings will also have an influence. A good quality machine with the right settings, right gas and decent wire will not produce spatter. If you dont have these basics prepare to do some sanding.

That is interesting to know thanks. The Licoln wire is great. So you would expect good welds. We stop at 20% here for spray transfer. We use o2 additions for mid range with 12% co2 in argon.

i'm going to be changing my gas a 90%argon 8%co2 2%o2 mix just to try as soon as my gas runs out which should be this week i will let everyone know how that works for me thanks for all the replies this is alot more than i get on the miller forum

So just a little bit of pondering....when welding in short circuit you will always have some spatter...not really excessive but close too spatter free will only happen in spray right? anyone?
Describe spatter free Shenion, you will always have a little bit of spatter or is that just me??
