Do you recall what. I've only needed to cadence brake once, in Portugal, it was very effective.

the speed awareness course I did was a total waste of time
the guys running it twisted facts to their own gain (eg. showing a graph of road deaths over the last 10 years, pointing out the reduction, and then saying that's because of a reduction in speeding)
they made a mess of explaining how average speed cameras work, I thought they were just dumbing it down for the crowd at first but later realised I don't think they really understood
they tried to talk about fwd vs rwd but didn't have a clue
their maths was off time and time again "it takes 8 times longer to stop from 80 than from 70"
really really boring, they ran out of stuff to do near the end (you have to be there for a set amount of time for it to count as passed) and we pretty much sat there talking amongst ourselves - I was on a table with 4 middle aged house wives who also thought it was a total waste of time
even more annoying... my brother runs a speed awareness course... and the 'instructors' get good money for it, more than the ones who ran my one deserved that's for sure

is that not because they're for people who have been caught speeding, not for people who have been caught driving badly?
I appreciate people have different views on speeding, but I don't think anyone is offended by someone doing 75 on an empty dry well lit motorway

I do, she was trying to tell me that a locked wheel will slow down a car quicker than a braked wheel. Was never going to wash (my day job is in Aerospace wheel, tyre and brake research!) and I did take her to task. Not at the time, not the place, but I did write to them afterwards.
Interestingly, 4 years later when I did my second SA course, there was no mention of the subject.

I think you have a point there Knighty. On all three occasions I was only able to do the speeds I was doing because there was precious little traffic on the motorway at the time (around 6.30 am as I recall). On one occasion, they had moved the cameras and I wasn't aware!

Part of the problem is modern cars....in the old days if you wanted to drive fast you needed driving skill. Now with modern computer trickery someone who is clueless can drive a 2 ton car at speed and rely on the car to keep them safe...
But the problem is....when they invariably get themselves into a pickle they have no clue what to do!
There is a difference between speeding on an empty motorway at 2am and driving down my road at 40mph (limit is 20mph!) on a school day!

I couldn't agree more!
I've always advocated that it is the inappropriate use of speed that is the danger, not the speed itself.
Anyway, on a brighter note, I've got the GT6 and the Mini ready for their MoT's on Monday so now have all day tomorrow to amuse myself in the workshop.

I did get pulled over in a company car when I was a computer engineer. New years eve going down hill at 85mph on the way to Cambridge. That was the 1.8 non turbo diesel escorts max.

My Mrs worked for porsche at the time she did her speed awareness course. And the lecturer stated,
"Car stopping distances are the same as they were 40 years ago"
Was hysterical when a fellow attendant of that course pointed out she worked for porsche and have carbon ceramic brakes and can stop a lot quicker.
She wouldn't believe it though,
When my Mrs came home and told me about this I chuckled to myself quite loudly as I know my old mk2 escort didn't stop unless you hit something.
that's just silly, typical fallacy, someone was speeding, there for speed was the cause of the accident
