Rescued this out of a skip, looks like it could be traded to the natives for my beer fund,, any clues how I would test it before selling it ?

Neg to neg.
Audio in via a cheap cable from the headphone socket on a phone.
Turn the volume right down before pressing play. Should make a boom boom noise.

No need for any hi-quality audio....just scratch the wires together.....that's the normal
sound coming from these cars these days.

Yes, anything with a headphone socket will work.
Or any other source of audio provided you can turn the volume right down first then gradually increase it.

That thing is a subwoofer so you would only expect to hear mostly bass with some muffled midrange/vocals

The subs are a well known loss leader product for JBL, in a decent box they perform well above their price point

I used to compete in car audio competitions, sound quality not bass off, even won a few in my time

I've had another look at this thing and these are the connections,

The amplifier feeds everything else too. To just test the sub, ignore the other connections. Feed it power and an audio signal of some sort. You could even stick a screwdriver up its chuff (low level input phono socket), whilst touching the screwdriver's shaft. That should give you a nice loud mains hum.

If you want to fully test it, connect loudspeakers to the relevant marked connections.
