We had one that ate its catch in the backgarden, dont see it much these days, just the aftermath. It landed on the scaffold I was working on one day, cant of been more than a foot from my head, turned and looked at me before gliding off.

Reminded me of when we were kids. Sister went to get something from her room and came back downstairs shouting "Mum, there's a bird in my room". Mum... "Oh for goodness sake, just shoo it out" Sis..." But it's a BIG bird ". Mum went up and there was a sparrowhawk perched on the end of the bed. Guess who got the job of getting it out...

I wouldn't have really, birds should be able to fly.
But you can't help but wonder if you could catch it.

I remember two close encounters with them.
A pigeon used to poop on Dad's old BMW R80. Then one day this grey streak hurtled down the street, round the lampost, up the path and KAPOW, big cloud of feathers and no more pigeon.
On a trip to France my mate fed the sparrows every morning. Then on day four a grey streak hurtled round the caravans etc etc.
He was devasted.
I started feeding the sparrows.
In fact we are off there this week.
I'll buy him some bird food.

And when one is giving chase and "locked on" to its prey, it's beyond awesome!!
Imagine the speeder bike chase on Endor in Return of the Jedi speeded up and you're not far away. Have seen it a few times and it always ends with one last passerine and a few feathers drifting slowly down to the floor...

They aren’t a stupid bird either. We had one that visited our garden where we worked. It appeared the wee birds hid in the hedge. The SH landed and walked into the hedge and chased the wee birds out, it was fast enough to catch the wee birds as they tried to make it to the next hedge( lesss than 10m) Quite impressive from a standing start
We used to have a pigeon fancier a few doors down. He admitted that he had once caught two sparrow hawks years ago and poisoned one of them. He felt so guilty about this that he took the second one from Cornwall to Wales and released it in a forest and drove home. When he got back to Cornwall it was there before him!

We have one that sits on the lamppost outside the bedroom window and stares at us. Looks like a kestrel on meth. No seen it hunting yet, but cleaned up the aftermath

Opened the door one morning and one flew off. It had nailed a pigeon and I disturbed his breakfast. He came back soon and finished it. Had another one cruise across the back garden, clearly in hunting mode. Beautiful to see.
