spare wheel carrier question

right i am making a spare carrier for the truck as the 33's break the hanging mechanism and i cant afford to keep buying them!

any way would 25mmx50mm box 3mm thick flex across a 1.75m span only suported at the edges? of shoud i go thicker.

the wheel will be mounted in the middle of bracket made from a double span spaced about 300mm apart

Im presuming swing away? In any case I'd go round tube rather than box but the 3mm should do the job is imagine

no not swing away that was the first plan but scrapped, it will sit across the top of the tub about the roller shutter

if I use 50mm x 30mm or 50mm x 50mm can I cut some 50 angle and cap the cut ends and use the angle as a mounting point with my hole drilled through that

is it going to be such a way that when you look in the rear mirror all you will end up seeing is a wheel?

maybe youd like to store it high for some reason but if it was me and i didnt have a reason to keep it high then id stow it under the body at the back personally but you may have a reason not to.

if it had to be up high id be making it out of stainless but again maybe you have a reason not to.

the wheels are just too big for the factory fit place and mechanism now so a new place has been decided upon I think

Lee - ask the question on the l200 forum; have you seen what Alan did?
Bizarrely, he's just bolted it through both layers of skin on the offside rear wing and, even more bizarely, it seems to have held. He didn't make his (think it's off a shogun) but the steel isn't massively thick.

I'll see if I can find a pic, but defo speak to Al.

Update; found a pic and the steel is more substantial than I remembered;

al used a swing away carrier from a surf mate, I have one and was going to use it but decided not to as I use the tub on a daily basis and it will pee me off no end having to swing that out of the way every time I need to open the tail gate. Hence why I am selling it and making something else

I aint that bloody strong mate its 26kg hard enough to lift it into the tub let alone onto the bars ontop of the roof and it will also act as a fook off wind break and make my center of gravity too high

i would make brackets up welded to roll bar so the wheel could be stored up right at the right hand side of the roll bar so you still have vision to look over your shoulder to the left out of the rear window when reversing

There's a knack to it. I learnt it at the bus company loading tyres onto the lorry with no tail lift. You won't see it done nowadays because no one will do it without a tail lift.
