Spare Polo Engine...

Anyone got a spare polo engine knocking about?

Mine decided to eat quite a number of teeth off the cambelt today, luckily only 5 minutes from home.

I suppose i'll whip the head off tomorrow and see how bad the damage is.

Apparently VW changed the Cambelt interval, to four years.

Well mine was done about three years ago but i don't think they fitted a genuine belt.
Also car has done a horrendous amount of miles in my ownership. I had it in my mind the belts were meant to be changed at 70,000 miles, which is more or less what it has done, so no excuse there.

Why did the belt fail?

I would find that out first - have timing covers off - before "I was off with its head"

Normally if belt lost teeth - something has stopped moving - pulley/tensioner/water pump? Engine internals.

check to see if it's one of those engines where the valves and piston clash.....
there are a few that dont......
might save u a lot of work........
it's all a bit modern for me........

Well it didn't seize, and it turns over. I think it's just a belt failure.

If it’s petrol and pent roof you might have got away with it

They use it in Seat and Skoda as well, there should be plenty knocking about.

Just turning over doesn't prove anything.

It would need a compression test and leak down test carried out to see if any valves are bent. But would need the valve timing correct for that to be carried out in the first instance.....

Probably less pain to get a used engine with warranty and chuck it in. Along with a new timing belt and full service of course

it could still do that if one of the ancillaries had failed though ,, fingers crossed , sometimes you can get lucky enough . My wee g60 corrado snapped a belt and I got away with just a belt.

I've decided the vehicle at 152k miles is not worth stripping or attempting to fix. I had a quick look on ebay for used engines, decided it was not economical.
It also needed two new rear wheel bearings which would be what £80 a side minimum + time.

There are some parts I can strip from car (annoyingly it just had 3 new tyres at £65 a pop) to hopefully recoup some cash to go towards new vehicle.
May advertise spares/repairs via facebook and see if there is any interest.

Pull the plugs and stick a cheap bore camera down there. It'll be much cheaper to fix than getting another car and atleast you know the problems. Assuming cosmetically, it still looks ok inside and out?
