Space - workbench and drill

I have a small shed 1m x 1.9m, that includes the lathe, bench grinder, bandsaw and a frustratingly small 0.5m x0.6m standing area - which is also storage for workbench and anything Im working on. Yesterday was ******* down and the workbench is outside getting wet, which would be fine if I didnt want to use it.

I'd like to squeeze in a proper bench, with a bench drill and vice on top, storage below, in the space which currently has all the cordless tools, mig welder and compressor.

I'd probably need to make the bench to fit 0.6 x 0.5m. What drill ahould I get? Im thinking to spend more for a mag drill then it would be easy to move, but they are an extra 100 quid.

Mag drills are great (suggest the Rotabroach panther as a very good, variable speed quality unit that doesn't break the bank) but they are very different from a bench drill. Yes it's sort of possible to use them for some jobs a bench drill does but it's often impractical, so be careful that it'll actually suit your needs.
The question is what you do drill?

PS, is there no way of getting a bigger shed? That's amazingly tiny...

A mate has his drill and bench grinder bolted to a disc that sits flush on his bench, he just turns it 180 degrees when he wants to use the grinder.

Could you get one of those drill converters things that you clamp a normal electric drill into? It's small enough and can be taken apart after you've used it.

Get a cheap old puller drill. Cut the pillar. Weld a plate on and use that to secure the mag drill.

Remove as required.
Disclaimer. Never seen or used a mag drill so no idea if feasible

It is a mess while Im doing the lathe mitor conversion, and a pain having to frequently move a 20kg motor out of the way.

I had one of those lidl drill coverters. My drill at the time didnt fit or it was rubbish? Either way it never got used. Im tempted to try another or make one up.

The lathe can fit a very expensive milling attachment, tho I think it would get in the way. Tempted to make one similar

That's cozy, won't take a lot of heating up in winter, if you had space for a heater that is.

Lidl / Aldi often do these cheap drill presses, they're pretty small. Space is obviously at a premium, so what about making up a bracket (clamp type) to bolt one of them to the the lathe bed, then have it on a on a pulley type arrangement that you can drop down from the ceiling then clamp it to the lathe bench when you need it, and lift it back up when you don't.
if you don't have area, you need to use the volume. Hanging stuff from the walls, ceiling etc, is a cheap and easy way to gain usable space.

where does the door go to? do you want to alter the lathe stand? do you have space to relocate the bits under the end of the lathe somewhere else?
Have the drill press and grinder on a hinged table which stores upside down under the end of the lathe and when you want to use them come up into the "corridor" at the lathe end and lock off.

I feel you could make better use of the walls and ceiling. No joke.

Make a shelf and get that top cabinet up there. Maybe make some brackets so that the workmate can be hung in the rafters.

You've then freed up some space where a bench can sit over the top of the bottom cabinet. If you made a 2" receiver (like on the back of some 4x4s) then you could have brackets for the grinder, vice etc. When not in use you could have more receivers on the wall to put them up and out of the way.

In such a small place you have to be tidy and organised. You'd be surprised at how much space you'll have if you put this away neatly.

The door is garden. Wall is single skin and I wouldnt trust it with the draws, both cabs overflowing and very heavy.

But you are right. What the wall really needs is a vfd cabinet

Can you make a canopy over the door/ front of shed to accommodate a bench. OK it's gonna be cold and wet in the winter but you have a tiny shed

Get some Dexion and build a "mezzanine", over the lathe and across that empty back wall, couple of big hooks for the Workmate - I've often felt like hanging workmates...
Then you can add some extra rails and bolt on some pegboard or similar to hang small tools on, or louvre panels for LinBins?

If you're not confident in the walls then get some steel shelving that's floor standing. The shelves below can take a huge amount of weight, have had plenty of steel stocked on them as well as engine components etc.

That's my approach, a few bays of Dexion shelving, probably best part of a half-ton on one of 'em (lathe and mill tooling, sparks for grinders etc.)! And a Dalek kick stool to reach the top shelf...

Any press drill adapter for putting a hand drill to make it a up/down press drill I have seen or used should be launched straight into a skip, don't waste any money on those.
A small "porch" outside the door with just a frame and some stapled plastic sheet would add valuable dryish space for using the bench outside.
