Space heater gas usage???

I have two electric tube heaters -one inside the lathe and one on the wall - left on 24/7 throughout winter. When I go in each evening the temperature is usually 10-12 degC and never lower than 8. I then switch on the fan heater and oil filled radiator while I'm in there for 2 or 3 hours which takes it up to about 18. I never get any condensation either. It is a brick/block built building with all walls, doors and roof fully insulated. IIRC the tube heaters are 60 watts each and I can't say I notice it on the electric bill.

it all depends on time your time and convenience to translate to cost

wood is free then you have to cut it up and then store it till dry is the correct way

quick heat vs long heat
all fire up in a moments notice and can be left on overnight

space heaters quick fire up comes with water problems
electric is flash heat but cools down quickly
diesel heaters flash heat but at a price

wood fire takes a while to light and feed so that it stores the heat fired twice a day
same with a mass rocket system

long heat storage within water tanks or mass rocket stoves the latter is costs in storage of the water and piping the water to them a mass core can be made cheaply
oil heater fired twice a day cost of oil can be quick fired

I used to run a similar propane space heater in my concrete double garage / workshop. The fumes were horrible & it pumped out so much condensation the walls ran with it. All my machines & tools got rusty.
I insulated the walls & roof with celotex offcuts & 6mm ply. Doors got the twin wall foil & bubble wrap. All it needs now is an oil filled rad on low & its toasty warm, no fumes & no condensation problems at all.

When I was in full time employment with a half decent salary I couldn't afford to run mine, it went to scrap when the price was high.

Scattered dust and paper everywhere and all the shed was PWT.

I wouldn't consider another.

If you just want a bit of warmth in a cold place its hard to beat radiant heat from an IR panel.

I have a blown heater - and use it outside under the carport ! One cold winter I even had it pointing under the vehicle whilst I changed the fuel tank. In the domestic sized (18' x 9') garage it's a bit too excessive to run continously so have a LPG radiant heater however that just give localised heat. Ok if working on a bench but not powerful enough for the whole area. What I've also got is an electric infrared patio heater. That just heats you and not the air and just take the chill off.

Sounds very similar to my situation!

Insulating the roof made a big difference from my experience.

I have one it only gets used for a few minutes when very cold to give my overalls a quick warm up before i put them on first thing in the morning while a wait for the wood burner to come up to temperature. Dont like to use to heat the workshop as they create so much damp air.

I have one of those gas space heaters & I stopped using it as it was hard on gas & made everything wet.

I now use a diesel / heating oil space heater. It has a thermostat fitted so it starts & stops itself as the temp changes. If you are on heating oil the fumes are minimal though you need to be careful of carbon monoxide but that would apply to gas as well. You get a lot more heat by using red diesel and it works out cheaper, so that's what I use now.

I have just fitted one of these to my Motorhome I cant fault it, a few people are using them as workshop heaters too, they will run from Red diesel 0.6L hour on full ( 5Kw), Kerosene, 28 second heating oil etc

I remember painting a Pantomime set in December in a very cold warehouse in Manchester ...we had space heaters roarring away all day but ...the paint would not dry 'co the space heaters made the air so damp....

On our boat we have a multi fuel stove, but we also have a diesel heater, called a mikuni MX60, runs on red diesel, ours heats radiators and hot water, ours is 7kw, some are blown air, can use them for frost protection etc, they also do a smaller version that is used in campers and vans, there are other makes, such as eberspacher, there are some that look like a wood burning stove called bubble ........ they are suppose to be very good, they all will produce dry heat, unlike gas which is known as wet heat. Look on Ebay ours is expensive but there are the smaller options.

I have a propane space heater good heating, but, uses a lot of gas and after about half hour warmer atmosphere stings eyes and rusts tools and any newly cut metal. I wouldn't recommend.

I had an old Calor Gas heater, got rid of it due to the condensation produced.
I currently have an old fan heater - used to be the wifes before we were married - yes it's that old!!!
After the current cold snap I'm going to get an IR heater.

Just worked it out - about half the price of electric!
Giving me ideas now for my offices and my hothouse staff!

Its even cheaper compared to dual rate electric ( for daytime use in a workshop ) and its quite an attractive proposition.

Why do they only advertise them for automotive / camper / boating etc activities ?

its not exactly warm but it definately isnt cold and i leave mine running all the time in the winter.
only problem with them is its an element in a plaster fibre board so they do break easy.

That is costing you about £45 a month for just 1 of them!
