south bend lathe belt???

I had a flat belt on my old lathe. I split a bit of conveyor belting from a local brick yard. It worked fine, I joined the belt with three big headed rivets, they lasted a few years till the heads fell off, probably replaced rivets half a dozen times in 30 years, used the same length of belt all that time. I used coca cola concentrate as belt dressing, just so happened I found a big can of it in the boot of a car and the bet was slipping really badly, a few drops on the pulley and it gripped really well. And the belt went clackyty clak, lovely sound.

If the motor is indeed a modified 3-phase one ( check the motor data plate and the way the windings have been connected ), it will not only fail to self-start but will also have only half its rated power. The run-capacitor modification that I mentioned will improve both these issues.

if its knacked u might as well pick a new one up a 3quarter horse is ony 60 quid from machine mart or get a second hand one of e bay or even a new one

I was thinking to myself 3/4 hp doesnt sound much, so I went and googled and they only had a 1/2hp motor on the 11" southbends!
Also seen this, surprised they still do all the parts, and mention of how to find the serial of your lathe if needed too by following the serial number link.

Im with the others, a motor that has a conversion that wont self start has a problem with how one of its windings is connected. But... for the price of a used 3/4 hp motor, Id just change it out.
