Sound deadening

I finally got my big compressor plumbed in and running, i have a couple of leaks in the copper airline to fix tomorrow, but nothing major. The compressor itself sits outside of the shed in a small enclosure i made for it. The enclosure is a copy of one we had at work, i made mine from 40mm square box section with galvanised sheet pop riveted to the box, i painted it black and it looks well. The compressor itself is not noisy and is quieter than i thought it would be. I'd still like it quieter, what can i stick to the galvanised sheet inside to kill a bit more noise ? I have seen that dynamat stuff used on cars to deaden engine noise. Anything else i could use ?

steel isn't the best choice especially sheet steel, I would line it with ply, you need a dense material for killing noise

That will stop the panels resonating, you need an low density fibreboard is very good

What are you teaching granny norm, not egg sucking I hope When my gran was alive I asked her and she said she had never once sucked an egg or thought of going for lessons. Anything inside the other box will help to quieten it, like build an OSB box inside the other one but as norm's gran says, put a vent in preferably to let the heat out so higher would probably be better.

You need to do two things first it to stop the panels from resonating, as you suggest dynamite is good but very expensive. The cheapest equivalent is self adhesive flashing ( it's exactly the same as dynamat). Clean panels, gently heat up flashing with hair dryer and press on with a seam roller. Next is to provide some acoustic insulation. Once agin the proper stuff is mega expensive. The next best solution is to use the fibre glass type cavity wall insulation, I think it comes in section 75mm thick and can be cut to size to fit.

Both techniques are tried and tested. The stick on flashing, I used years ago when building monster sound systems in cars, it still works a treat and is a fraction of the cost of the real stuff.

Don't forget to leave an opening for the air intake. This will be a weak spot and will let out a small amount of sound. If you really want to go whole hog, install rubber isolation pads under the compressor feet

I think you are right about the isolation pads under the feet, i can feel the compressor running through the ground 20 feet away. I have cut a fair few holes in the enclosure to let air in, both to feed the compressor itself and to cool the cylinder. I'll try the flashing and see how it goes.

It was great after the initial "KABOOM", completely silent.

Yeah I've just seen that, if applied carefully, noise will only be an issue once for a fraction of a second
