Ref your post number 17. Note if the "amps" function on your meter exceeded it's max rating it may have an internal fuse that has now blown. So before using your meter again , check for any internal fuses !
Thanks for the info. If only it were so straightforward. The original internal regulator has three leads, red, green and black. The replacements I'm getting come from generic brushgear/regulator units as per the enclosed image with the brushgear part cut off. Thus the regulator has three bare unmarked leads. I can work out the earth from how the donor unit is configured but don't know which way round to connect the other two - or as above whether that matters? My alternator doesn't have an obvious diode across the rotor.
Thanks for the multimeter advice Mike. It seems to have a cut out rather than a fuse. Turning it off and on brings it back to life.
Are there any other things I can check while it's installed or do I need to get it off and check the stator AC balance?
