Reason is:
Compression ignition on a diesel rather than spark ignition on a petrol
water doesn't compress unlike diesel vapour. Which then gives you a "Hydrolock" (car won't turn over on the starter or violently stops dead when running)
Easiest way to remove it...take out the glowplugs...crank it over , water then flies out of the glowplug holes.
If the water ingress happens between starting, it should run fine after that.
If it happens whilst running (especially with the foot down) your at risk of having bent conrods...

Poor bloke has his fuel filler cap missing and you lot are telling him that someone's micturated in his tank and that his engine is going to seize.
