Couple of old sayings "no good deed goes unpunished" and "if you work for nothing you'll get plenty of it"
I have a story like everyone else who works with their hands , i was working in an industrial hose company during the height of the boom over here, a lad pulls up in a brand new porsche one day and asks if i can do stainless welding work , i tell him yes and he says he can put plenty of little bits of work my way as he is restoring a yacht. He used to pop around with loads of little brackets and things and i'd make new ones or repair the ones he gave me. No problem with paying me and he was genuinely a nice decent guy.
He came in with a stainless steel framework off the back of the boat that holds up a self inflating life raft but it wasn't strong enough and was flapping about , i welded in some nice 316ss bracing and polished it and it was a nice job, his father appeared a week later to collect it , a scottish "gentleman" (i've nothing against scots) but when i told him the bill was 50 euros he had a meltdown, he would not pay it as the bill was far too big , i told him the work had taken well over an hour and i had to provide the materials, cut no ice with him.
Told him no money no frame and to f**k off, his son came in a few days later with a red face and was very sorry, never seen him since though.

Finishing the conversation off with a hint about it being nice to know that there are still some decent types about would polish it off nicely.
Doubt the original plumber would either take the hint else care if he did get it though.
