I have a 14 year old Toyota with some rusty spots on it - particularly on the rear axle frame and around the fuel tank and some bad spots on the front sub frame. I'm trying to buy the car a few more years - ideally about 5-6 which i think it should be able to do. I noticed the corrosion was getting worse a few years ago when i did the clutch but i thought i would get round to it later and frankly its become worrying in places. After reading a fair bit on the internet over the last few weeks (particularly old threads on this forum) i have settled on:
Spray the underneath of the car with degreaser
Spot blasting/needle scaling the rust spots
Applying Jotomastic 87 winter grade to them in 3 coats
Seen as it looks like most of these rust spots have been caused by abrasion of the factory paint in these spots i am intending on spraying some gravitex on top of the primer to protect the epoxy primer in these areas.
I have a few questions:
1. Is it worth applying some rust remover (i have an old bottle of Jenolite) to the areas i spot blast? Would the acid interfere with the paint adhering to the metal? Or is it just best to leave it and paint it quickly before the metal flash rusts?
2. I was planning on just spot blasting and priming the rusty areas. How well does this Jotomastic stuff adhere to sound paint in your experience? Is it worth painting over the existing sound paint? Or would it just lift off and trap moisture and salt against the factory paint?
3. Is this gravitex stuff permeable? I have seen other vehicles with this undercoating stuff on them that seemed ok but underneath were badly rusted. What are your experiences with it?
4. I am intending on doing 3 coats of jotomastic on the rust spots. Do i need this in between coats or does it adhere fairly well to itself?
While i'm reasonably competent mechanically i don't really know all that much about dealing with rust or painting. So i thought i would ask some questions. I would hate to make a hash of it and do all this work for nothing.
