It does have a tutorial section and I've been working my way through it but you would really want two screen one with the tutorial and one with the drawing it's mostly the drawing I'm after as you can convert the lines into any material you want in the weldmets section and it will also give you a cut list I had had a look at a few books on Amazon but anything with a decent review seems to be for the more advanced users so just thought I'd ask here first

I just went through the tutorial then cracked on and drew my first
engine adapter. I learned more doing my drawing. If you have a
laptop run it next to you monitor, you can run a virtual dual monitor
on it, which is great for reading instructions/help files while your doing
some thing.

Great idea graffian but don't have a laptop what is a virtual dual monitor does that mean that I can run to monitor from the same computer

Yes, thats exactly it.
You run the PC and laptop/otherPC networked together and there is a bitof software that makes the second lappy the virtual screen, so the other screen is also your desktop. It isn't perfect and can be a tad slow but it's fine for documents, showing a rendered view or help files. There is a bitof microsoft software hidden onthe windows disc that will do this but it's really crap, there is a freeware or shareware programme which is better. Take a look on google.
I have forgotten if I mentioned video cards?
I needed a new video card, I bought a proper FireGL card on fleabay, made a real difference and it was pretty cheap as they are getting on a bit. Cards like that[quadro/firegl] seem to all have dual outputs. A second monitor isn't that expensive.
Something else that works suprisingly well is using a remote desktop. I was using a toughbook that was pretty slow, it wouldn't run solidworks or proE. I found I could run a remote desktop of my pc on the laptop and run solidworks quite well, remote desktop is a facility in XP.

After completing the SW built-in tutorials then for a complete noob numpty like me I found these very helpful:

Keep open in one window, SW in another window, stop the tutorial switch to SW window, do it myself.
Go back to tutorial rewind, switch back try again - repeat 27 times then move on. By the 5th or 6th tutorial I got the repeat/rewind rate down to about 3 times!
Similarly tried searches in Youtube and found lots of similar tutorials, but of very variable quality.

That looks pretty good for the price. You want to avoid the really simple books[ijits guides]. I have only bought one computer book[at normaish prices] it was an autocad book[cost something like £60] and after an hour or so I put it down and can't remember ever having looked at it again.
With stuff that has a version, 2007 in this case, you often find the book's reduced, there is a yank site Bookcloseouts.com, or something like that, I bought a delphi superbible form them, for a dollar! There is also usedbooksearch.co.uk it searches all the major on line book shops.
