I would go with the original system quite often the sun affects solid gloss colour and it fades which stands out like a sore thumb sat next to base coat and lacquer

It depends a lot on the colour and paint. I've seen lots of Seat in blue, black, yellow and red with lacquer peeling off the bonnet and roof. What car are you looking at ?

It's a Toyota avensis 2001 oh it's blue

I'm with snooper, the latter is a more modern and better system. My own understanding is that the direct gloss finish especially in the strong pigment primary colours were prone to fade in sunlight and less likely with clear over. The downside of course is the cost of basecoat.
