If it's automotive use, then use heat-shrink a decent way down the wire in each direction. The solder runs nicely down the strands under the insulation, and if unsupported, it will eventually fatigue and break where the solder stops.

I've been using the same roll of 60/40 flux cored with a trace of copper for probably 20 years. The trace of copper stops the molten solder pulling copper out of your bit - without it you end up with a dissolved bit, even on the Weller iron plated ones. In fact the iron plated ones develop cavities behind the plating where a small scratch has exposed naked copper.

mines going pitted because of that, will need to get a replacement tip aswell eventually.
