Sold a reat old Herbert, need to shift him now ?

Next door had a 2 head one worked well but not loved

Here is a lovely old Jones and Shipman drill I bought a while ago. I travelled a fair distance to palletise it. I knew it was too tall for my Sprinter van so I just went to prepare it. Then shipped through our pallet network. Chap had a telehandler on site.
Weighs about 900kg or so.
Not easy to tell in the photo but that is a 120x120 pallet for extra stability.
Note the table wound as low as possible and heavy vice down low - anything to reduce than centre of gravity.

The buyer is a machine company in Ireland and he is sending his driver over, well i think its his own.

Ill just prerp it on two pallets then to be safe. I cant believe work was going to scrap it. Only found out a couple weeks back about that. Glad i said i could sell it for them, got £650 for it with a burnt out tapping head motor.

I am going to miss the big old beast. For what we do its big as rare drill above 6mma nd tap above M10, mainly M8 by the thousand. and loads of M5/4

Got some new gear, not bad kits and a bit quicker, dam production. quick quick quick.

Wellndecided to call the buyer to see whay his plans are. He called his driver and he told him not to bother with a pallet/frame or anything. He is going to crane it on his flat deck and strap it down.

Ah well. If he is happy with it. Saves me messing to sort it.

I give it a couple of weeks before the Optimum kit is broken & they will wish they kept the Herbert, No comparison.
Last school i worked in we had three Optimum pillar drills the rise & fall mech on all broke within weeks. The maintenance contractor gave us some spares & the gears appeared to be made from compressed sintered swarf. Handles fell off as the threads stripped out of castings. Shocking quality.

Each head will un bolt, only 4 bolts and electrical connections.
If there's enough slack, I'd drop the table, unbolt the 4 columns and the bottom and bolt them back onto the table to reduce centre of gravity and keep secure. Might need to knock up an adaptor plate or 4 to get 4 bolts onto the table, but saves un wiring.

Love those old Herbert drills!

It pees me off aswell, as the head depot has just spent millions on a new buiuling and it took a coule years to give us £5k for a drill, not much to get an industrial drill is it. .But the Herbert was not good for idiot use. No ES, no breaking at all, it can drill six 6mm holes through 5mm plate before it stops when turned off. Some good power behind it but will easy rip of a finger or two. And yep ther are folk that will not clamp .jobs.


Although also the Optimium is quicker setting up and more accurate. and had it running 3 weeks and its done a good 30K holes and threads.

And yes sill miss it. I was going to have it but a bit big for my wee shed lol.
