I have a memory of seeing one of those large mirror arrays in a valley somewhere hot, like south of France or maybe it was south Africa? Anyway it was bleedin 'ot. They focused all the mirrors on to one spot and melted an industrial diamond!

Looks as though the legend of Archimedes using mirrors to set fire to ships may be credible!

James May did a program recently about new energy sources, and both the solar metal melter and the large mirror arrays/solar collectors were featured. I think in the program they also cooked (set fire to) a burger or something too. Might still be on BBC iplayer....
