What material would they use for sofi
t board in the 70's
It sort of looks like asbestos but I can't think they were building with that then? It is the same on all houses in our close.
Was there another sort of fibre board.

It's pretty useless to screw to and I am trying to fit new 9mm soft cladding in upvc but the damn screws wont grip.

Any suggestions for fixing quick and cheap.....this task is dragging now. What with wind rain and baby sitting.....I am missing our clubs final fishing match of the year tommorow so I am a very unhappy bunny just now.

Send me a picture via PM if you can, good chance that it's asbestos if the screws don't bite and hold. Other material was possibly cement board, doesn't take a screw very well

If it's cement board I have had some luck with gripfill adhesive applied first and then self tapping screws as a belt and braces approach, woodscrews didn't grip at all.

I used the screw caps with the little hinged cap to finish it off, looked ok and still up after several years of winter winds.

You can still buy cement board soffits and it's difficult to tell asbestos ones from cement ones.

I don't actually want to remove it to be honest. i have just purchased a boat load of 9mm upvc to clad it all if it can stay there that's fine..

You could paint it to seal it, or even use pva to seal it then overboard it, I'm told this method is used by the building contractors currently refurbishing the council houses round here.

find the studs/joists and use longer screws into those rather than the board itself

Difficult to say from the picture, if in doubt treat with caution. Whatever you don't remove it your self and council tips only take cement bonded material where the asbestos content is 1% or less. I suspect what you've got there based on your description is asbestos insulating board (AIB), commonly used for soffits. If you get caught doing a DIY on AIB and taking it the tip you will have every book thrown at you.

Having found asbestos many times (potentially) I would just radio for our hazmat department who would take over from there you would think I could identify it. it's very brittle and very hard . I seem to remember it being being more dusty and softer..... but it's been over 10 years now since I saw any.

so does ours...Householder double wraps and seals the bags with gaffa tape,then phones council who have 1 special asbestoes day per month for you to dispose of and its all free...

I'd seal it and leave it in situ, AIB is much much worse than cement based, and as said above needs a licensed removal firm

Take a sample, seal it in a bag and get it tested. £50 for piece of mind is a bargain.
I had to get it done on some ceiling boards in the garage. Fretted over it for weeks until eventually got it tested. Turns out it was just cement board, but as I say it's impossible to tell the two apart.

It's been fine for around 50 years so it's not being moved now. I just wondered if you can tell the difference. it's already been painted and now it's going to be clad.
