Sockets for gland nuts

Swa glands etc..

Ine sure I've scrolled through videos where people are fitting glands and have a stumpy 1/4 socket for the glands nuts...

Figured these were a normal thing, perfect for getting into tight places etc.

Fancied getting myself a set... can't find any for the life of me

Anyone have any ideas? Im sure the ones I've seen look made for the job

Back in to day if you went to a job and all the conduit bushes /lockrings/nuts were mullered you new Stan browns electrical services had been there, shocking lot they were

i had a pair for the 20 and 25mm glands they only did the male brass bushes not the swa glands they had the big iron locknuts in the boxes,just used water pump adjustable pliers

On a SWA gland nut sometimes you just can't get a pair of grips in so the only way to get them tight is a hammer and basher! We use the armouring as an earth so we need to be sure they are tight, it's also on site temps so we get numb nuts dragging our panels around live often enough. It all gets ripped out in the end anyway "it's only temporary".

There’s a Brocket which is a shallow 1/4 drive socket for conduit bushes but it’d be too shallow for SWA glands.

That's the hard way round putting the gland in the panel first.

maybe I've just seen these and assumed there was a full set to buy

might just make a list of all the sizes and buy a bunch of sockets to fit... think I'll struggle to find the bigger ones in 1/4 ratchet size tho.... 3/8 ratchet might be a bit big for some spots :-o

well... just had a look, naff all available in 1/4 ratchet size

for plastic glands I could 3d print some... and print a 15mm nut on the back of the socket... so I could get a ratchet spanner in... which is lower profile than a ratchet


might print some then if they work get them metal 3d printed.... (way overkill but it'll make me happy)

I am sure I have seen some really shallow socket sets like you describe but I didn't find any with a quick search.

Would a wide jaw shifter help?

There are ones with thin jaws too.

I might be dim here, but it is not clear to me whether you are talking about the nut on the inside of the box, that holds the gland onto the box or the nut on the outside that clamps/waterproofs the cable.

It is not clear if both sides of the CK one are identical. I think one side is bigger than the other. If space were real tight, you could buy two and cut off one half of each.

Brocket is the tool that is designed specifically for that - they are fairly recent, before that you used a bush spanner or struggled with a shifter.
Couple of different sizes are available to cover 20, 25 and 32 glands.

If you want stubby sockets in a full set you are talking about something like the low profile / nano sockets, which you can get in full sets - but I don't think they will cover the larger nuts as they normally only go up to about 24mm or something like that.

i machined a normal 3/8 socket down for 20mm brass bushes, and made the 25 and 32 bushes sockets as i couldnt find anything really suitable to start with. still have them somewhere

sorry I meant the nuts inside the boxes, normally no problem getting a spanner etc. on the outside

I modify a half inch drive socket in the lathe by trimming the internal chamfer off so you get full engagement on the locknut. The one in the photo has a chamfer on the outside as well but it was for clearance in a curved wall light fitting and wouldn't be needed for general use

Today I turned down a deep 3/4" 41mm socket in my lathe for a job - "special thin walled - hub nut socket".

Picked an ancient old chrome plated/rusty Elora six sided one for the job.

Not used lathe for over a year I would guess - but it's handy to have - when you need to do something on a bank holiday weekend...

Tipped cutter - they really not that hard - your average socket...
