Came to this thread a little late, so for what it's worth, the knob described is indeed 'slope down' and works as described above.
Post gas flow is pre-set but can be adjusted by a small trimmer on the pcb. It's location is on the opposite end of the board to the group of three trimmer pots (Do Not play with these!). This should be set to give about 10 secs of delay at the end of the weld and I vaguely remember that you may have to actually strike an arc first for this to come into effect - it may not time correctly if you just press and release the trigger.
Finally, the socket on the front is for a simple remote control.
