Snow socks

For the last twenty years I’ve carried snow socks in the back of the car. Today the all season tyres couldn’t quite manage the snow and ice on our lane so I fitted (lots of faff and cold fingers) the snow sock. All hail snow socks and we got moving again nicely. Only a tiny regret I sold my 4x4 but couldn’t afford the fuel costs anymore.

I have chains for when I was working on Skye in the winter. Got me out of trouble a few times. I was working on masts on the top of mountains with unmaintained private access roads though...

Snow socks are good. I had to use mine once, and they meant I could just keep trundling on through the snow drifts.

Although I wish I had put them before getting stuck, so I could have avoided having to dig out enough snow to get the required wheel rotation to get them over the tyres

Do you have to have tyre garters to keep the tyre socks up?

I've got a set of chains that only fitted a car I don't have any more - an Alfa 75TS - the only time I used them, it was to throw mud up the front of my mum's house . . . the intention was to get off her lawn, but even with the LSD in the back, it didn't really want to.

Snow socks in the back of the Challenger, the Alfa and the other halfs Fiesta - all bought, unused, from ebay from people who sold the car they had bought them for. So far, I will be able to do the same

Used chains once on rear axle of a LR series two, hill was covered in ice and car slid into kerb popping tyre off the rim, so fit spare and chains to get up the hill.

At a push Zipties through the rim and around the tyre works. Ive a bunch of 1mx15mm monsters in the boot.

I suspect that chains wouldn’t fit as this modern car has those trendy huge wheels that fill the wheel arches, only just had room to ft the sock thing’s. There was also the extra help from the auto hand brake thing that insisted on applying handbrake at the mere hint of the car sliding backwards - how helpful.

You might be surprised. I can't use traditional chains on my vw tiguan but konig k-summit fit since they don't require any inner clearance.
A bit odd but actually quick and easy to fit and remove. Not cheap though..
I got as far as the off-road spec utilities truck did. We ran out of ground clearance rather than traction!

That is the only thing that's once stopped my Lancia integrale over nearly 30 yrs, ground clearance - deep fresh snow it copes with, it gets pushed aside or flattened - a few days old stuff thats not so keen to flatten down it tends to climb up on - which is fine while the wheels stay on top . .. when they don't and it drops on its belly, forward motion stopped. Reversed back out okay that one time - took the hint, went a different way.

I had similar with my Mini, out playing in the snow until the sumpguard lifted the front wheels up had to get out and push it back a couple of feet to get some traction.
