e/ contactor means a fire risk not associated with a conventional meter.

We have one in our business unit.
We got a threatening letter from the power company saying they had come to read our meter on such and such a day and that if we didn't let them next time they would cut us off.
We called and politely informed them that:
A, we are a business and hence were open on said day.
B, our meter is in a shared cab at the end of the building so even if we were shut the inspector could of accessed the meter.
C, we have a smart meter, they read it remotely.
Funny thing was that when we set up the account we informed them of having a smart meter. Idiots.

the tatrrif is fixed so hardly likely if scrotes enter its at there own risk as io have cameras burglar alarm and autodial to my mobile along with other defences and who cares what power u use and who knows `they do anyhow juist look at there computer and it tells them what your consumption is from the year blonk

I bet it's more expensive to send meter readers round, really bills should come down. Meters are replaced every so many years anyway and I bet a smartmeter is cheaper than a conventional one.
I was due to have one fitted, G4S made 5 appointments and cancelled them all a couple of days before they were due to call.

Daughter had one fitted a couple of weeks ago and is now obsessed with seeing what uses what, giving me a headache with gems such as ' did you know it costs x pence to make a cup of tea'

Not read all the comments but I've done around 2000 installs (2000 each so 4000 meters)
Yes the conspiracy theorists all pipe up but I've seen people make genuine savings, often those who need it the most
If you want facts then google smicop, it's very exciting.....
I won't defend the energy companies but most have wriggled out of their ECO schemes early, so they have plenty of money to pay for them
Also once the governments infrastructure is setup we will have 24 hour switching available, however this being the governments bit it's already late

Friend was telling me when his mother had one fitted they checked all gas appliances and condemned her boiler - but could do a deal on a new replacement 
This was in winter a couple of days before Xmas so they left an 80+ year old widow without any heating ! After Xmas a plumber was called in and boiler checked over thoroughly but no fault found so it looks as if the contractor that fitted the meter was trying to drum up other business.

Remember years ago when the TV cable companys said to us "can we give you cable" and we all said yes as we were promised free TV and we did,nt need a roof ariel too...so we let them dig all our pavements up including our front paths and gardens but it did,nt matter as we were all getting free TV..Fast forward to 2016 and can someone remind me and others what the top TV cable package now costs, i dont know as i never fell for all the crap and stayed with freeview but i bet its getting on for £70 per month and they can switch you off whenever they like regarding unpaid fees even iff its not your fault. Free smart meters anyone???

in simples terms a smart meter is a gimmick to get them into our homes and gives the power companies an easy means of disconnection, I don't personally see how they benefit anyone sure you can see what you are using but if you need to use that appliance your not going to turn it off because you are using x amount per hour, they could have simply retro fitted devices to show what we are using, how many people will be wrongly disconnected when fully rolled out, I see a few people being miserable especially at the hands of gritish bas

As an alternative for those like @cumbriasteve's daughter just wanting to see how much it costs to run an appliance for x minutes/hours, how about these ones you can buy for not a lot which plug into a 13A socket?

Most of the people that I know that have them say for the first few weeks they take notice of them.. then its just another thing they ignore.
They wanted to fit one here and it doesn't worry me if they do, but apparently not enough mobile coverage.
