Ahh that's right, the part is earthed! I haven't seen this done in years.

Just a stab in the dark but I can bet the fella in that video has drank his fair share of Moon Shine in his time.

Erm! 'washing soda'? shouldn't that be Caustic soda? you'd be better off with fairy liquid.

Everybody says washing soda [usually American ones featuring "Arm & Hammer" soda].

Give it a bit of wellie. I have heard of people using arc welders for electrolysis.

I have been doing it recently to clean bits for my 9000......give a good dose of washing soda, I also start with warm water to dissolve it.......negative to the item iirr and positive to the return. I used two lengths of rebar 180 degrees apart and linked together with wire..make sure that you have good continuity with a meter..battery charger on trickle and leave for 12 hours or so...start to get an orange froth fairly quickly.....

Leaving it overnight to see in the morning. If there's no result, I might need to increase number of anodes and beef up the hanging wires.

Well, I didn't burn the shed down overnight, nor succumb to noxious fumes this morning.

However, there was little or no activity in the bucket so I though "What the Hell" and whacked the amperage up to 80 with the charger [it's one of those you can use to jump-start the car too] and already I have bubbles.

So, I either need to a) increase the size of the wire hangers [MIG wire too thin and is limiting current transfer ] or b) increase the number of anodes.

Will retort later in the day............. [ #progress ]

Increase the strength of the electrolyte with a bit more washing soda. Should see the amps go up without having to turn the dial on charger.

Wasn't there a set of loose ball bearings in the bottom rusty groove? That sealed bearing looks a bit small to be taking all the load on its own. My rotary table, although much larger, has a small central bearing for lateral location then a set of loose ball bearings around outer edge under the table to take the vertical load and thrusts from cutting.

Just had a look again and not as I thought. The vertical load is taken on a plain bearing face to the outer edge of the casting. There doesn't seem to be an easy way of lubricating this face. I assume oil or grease before assembly.

Thanks, stormin. No, no loose ball bearings.

Been out and added extra anodes and it's working fine now. Planning to 'fine tune' set up so it's much easier in future with less faffing about with bits of thin wire as hangers.

I am able to confirm it looks like it removes anodising as well as rust, not that it matters in this instance. Pics later once parts are cleaned up.

For longer narrow pieces use a plastic drainage pipe.
