Aye, that Harry fella done the scraping on my machines. The cost for my two lathes combined was less than half of what you have been quoted for yours and that includes hard chroming the tailstock quill and honing the tailstock bore to size.

If you can be prepared to think big, a large Snow or Churchill grinder will pull some decent money in over time... Basically because no-one else wants to put one in, or maintain it, for the frequency of use.

You'll still need a beefy foundation for whatever machine you decide on, so may as well go big rather than limit yourself?

We have a big Snow grinder in our workshop, it'll have a 4m bed on it, and it's pretty decent as an all purpose machine. The foundations on it are supposed to be pile driven and quite deep.

We have a much bigger Zocca dedicated to our process blade grinding, and apparently there was £80k of foundation and installation costs around 30 years ago!

Brian was a master at grinding, but a rubbish scraper !so he had a chap called Harry if I remember come in and do the scraping and allignment

Harry did mine, he was finishing off a S&B when I got there

It’s perhaps worth considering woodturning lathes too. There are approximately 10 million Union Graduate lathes with banged up beds being sold off by schools for pennies. 1 bloke in the UK refurbs them, grinds bed, new motor, VFD, new bearings, £££ to pros or serious hobbyists who want a solid machine.

I told him he was nuts and gave him industry standard prices.
It raises concern when they don’t know how to quote properly

That's all very well but could you trust him now? Many couldn't I'm sure and just wouldn't give him any business.
