Small job for someone with a lathe...

Hi All, I’m needing some bonnet pins for my Westfield if anyone has some ally bar lying around? They are 25mm long, 12mm wide at widest part and with a 16x2 or thereabouts shoulder. Also needs to be tapped down the centre M6 to fix... Can do a drawing if anyone is able to do it? Doesnt need to be overly accurate!

Seems easy enough and would be a good excuse to use my new taps.
Best have a drawing or a photo. If I understand it, 25mm total length, 16mm diameter head, 2mm long, reducing to 12mm diameter and tapped m6.
How many do you need, 2?

That 16 x 2 bit looks suspiciously like a flat washer to me. Which would make it a lot easier to make.

It is indeed a washer...and could well still be a washer to keep it simple

I haven't got any ally bar, but that job would be perfect for me to practice with my mini lathe that I have just bought.

If nobody has some around I’ll order a bit up next week Not in a rush for them - just to tidy them up especially since they are both odd!

Have you got a time limit? I could ask the guys in our toolroom if they have some. Place is closing late July and there are various bits of scrap floating around

In which case, the closest is an M8, Form A washer (16mm OD, 1.6mm thick, 8.4mm hole), see http://www.woodstockindustrial.com/wam.html There are no M6 washers in that OD. or thickness.

So put an 8.3mm dia. x 1.5 long shoulder on the end of the part to centralise the washer.

Ah, the shoulder is at the tapped end. Makes more sense now, I was imagining a shoulder nut type thing.
Ive got 7/8" bar so its no effort to include the shoulder in one peice.

No, but I do like to see things done properly. The original suggestion of a washer was very good as it minimises material turned to swarf. But you don't want an M8 washer waggling around on an M6 fastener, so the shoulder is an easy fix to that.

That washer isn't all that central and my guess is any old 6mm "penny" washer would do, probably has one on the back of the plastic too. Don't over complicate things if you don't have to.

They’re nothing fancy and a washer would be fine - its just to locate the bonnet in to the nose on a Westfield but I thought having it one piece would be neater but as others have said, it over complicates it
