not easier to add a tow bar than to lift it in and out?

for small chipper with power.... get small chipper and fit bigger engine instead of revving engine up? - don't think the next step up of engine is that much heavier?

After the 460cc singles it jumps up to the 600-1l twins. From ~30kg to ~60kg, double, cost a lot more too!
Tow bar and trailer could be an option but I'd rather not. It will be much harder to move around and gardens often have steps, steep slopes, walls and other access problems.

You're not the only one in a physically challenging job, you know.

A "strong core" means nothing. You could throw your back lifting a penny off the floor. Lifting 50kg unaided is foolish, especially when it's a dead lift.

Disagree if your back goes from a penny then the damage was already there.


Anyway I see a few kits on amazon, but appear to be for the 200cc engine

It doesn't matter how you double the speed, it's the fact that your over speeding a cutter head.
Research the increase in forces for a doubling of RPM......

Are you thick? Theres no increase of speed at the cutter. I am doubling the engine speed to ultimately get more bangs and more torque for the same weight. As standard these machines bog right down and can stall out if not careful how they are fed.

Have to agree modern briggs stuff is poor quality.
I think it's not made in USA any more.

It’s easy to get the GX engines to rev higher, we have to do the mods for our go-kart engines. Basic mods to increase revs are remove the governor and replace the valve springs with stiffer (OE springs cause valve float around 5k rpm). That should get you to 6k but doesn’t really get you more power. Ignition timing, carb jets & debaffle the exhaust are next stage to give more power. Just make sure to use decent quality oil and change it regularly.

Pm me if you’re interested and I’ll send you an example Dyno sheet for a modified gx160 so you can weigh up torque vs rpm

Space for a pulley twice as big might be tight (wheel looks close).

Once its shown to be working properly, I'll not be afraid to void warranty and get welder out.
I'll likely ever fit the wheels and instead repurpose them into a mini cart, that it can sit in.

I've seen a couple of ads for 2:1 speed reduction gearboxes which may fit straight on. Odd thing is the output shaft is smaller at 22mm, that makes me uncertain if they are actually speed increasers.

If you are going to change the engine, it might be possible to make the drum assembly skid mounted so you do not have to lift, but drag up a ramp.

What vehicle is it? I think there are swing cranes for lifting wheelchairs into cars. One of those could help

My thoughts were, if it can not be lifted easily by hand to use my A frame ladder as high anchor point to lift it with . Will take extra time, but these jobs I will be including that in the price, and I'd likely be taking the ladder anyway.

I'm not wanting to remove the govener as such, just increase it. I read that these are also a weak point and can let go as its a plastic gear inside?

I imagine it also will want better cooling, I could add an oil cooler.
I assumed these had ball bearings but looks like shells on the crank, do they have a proper oil pump rather than splash?

I was under impression cams, springs, conrod and flywheel are the important bits.

Please post up any decent shops or information?

I have a Hyundai 420cc 14hp chipper, its quite capable for thie price/size. 200kg weight.
It is awkward but just about movable.

Can't see the logic of dismantling it and moving about in the boot of a car, get a trailer or a van and do it properly with a bigger machine.

Luckily I have two hands. The job involves a lot of lifting from big logs to dragging brush all day. A strong core protects the back..

I'm with Matt on this one. I had a similar attitude when I was younger. 4x 25kg cement bags at a time, all day long. No problemo. Regular hulk I was.
Now I can be laid up for a week just from getting out of bed wrong.

Doesn't matter how strong your core is, or how fit or macho you are, or how long you've always been doing it. The damage can take years to show up.
Once you've ******** your back (and its a when not if) you'll be crying like a baby just trying to reach to wipe your ****. Ask me how I know.
Look after it, there is no pain like it.
