yes, that's it. I should make one point though - its more of a problem with certain types of cutters and materials and obviously depth of cut, travel speed etc. if you machine has a lot of play then I suggest you junk it or fix it. To the point however slot mills by the nature of their work cutting blind slots have to in effect drill down and will be climbing and conventional to some extent as you traverse the cutting of a slot, end mills, work on the faces or "ends"
Sometimes you can tell too much and not enough in a post, hence "take a class or seek good guidance from qualified persons" John mentions "hobby engineering" I think when you install a big milling machine in your garage you might have passed that "hobby" point. I did 2 yrs in the machine shop as an apprentice I am by no means an expert as a result of those two years guidance and training

I use an indexed blade for cutting delrin, one of the DCMT ones with the coating on it for cutting aluminium when I do the machining and my slot drills are brand new Tin coated so lovely and sharp!
I use indexed blades on the face cutter as well, leaves a really nice finish.
Old school terms this is true.
Now days it's hard to give a basic name like this to cutters. You have what would have been considered as a end mill with 3 or 4 flutes which can plunge.
3 flutes being supposedly the happy medium between a slot and end mill to be a jack of all trades if you like.

You have to look closely at some of them now as though they may plunge the face teeth are not always at 90° to the flutes so don't leave a flat bottomed hole if you use them as a counterbore. They do break through nicely acting like a trepanning tool and cutting out a nice tapered disc leaving a clean hole.

Yep, I had some 5 flutes back when we had a cnc mill, which were awesome for ramping and slotting with, damned things soaked up all the power I could throw at them.

I like old school, old school is good! It didn't involve Europe much and people with degrees and yet zero experience of their actual job, you could just sack someone if they were useless (in fact put their toolbox on the step with their P45 was good enough) , HR didn't exist as a profession and certainly not at a directorship level. Our cars worked and when they didn't you could fix them without consulting your laptop. These days milling is often carried out in an office on a computer screen, the machine itself it in a big green metal box with windows in it so you might see what its up to after you have hit the send from the office. Heck their was no minimum or living wage and as a result people were actually better paid against the cost of living.
