Slight Problem

I'm currently in school and part of my program I have to learn some welding. The welding class is doing TIG at the moment. I don't have the steadiest hands so my welds aren't all that good, on top of that theres a bit of an ass in the class that likes to mess with my machine and set amperage up while I'm welding etc. I wanna get him back.. but not in a way where he can get hurt or cause more trouble then the laughs are worth. I've heard that magnets can mess with the arc so I wanna try something along those lines. I know this is terrible.. two wrongs don't make a right etc, however the teacher hasn't been able to help me either. No cameras and too many students to really watch over. If you have any ideas for a fun harmless way to get back at him I'd be interested... again I'm not looking to hurt the person or anything that drastic. Just kinda make him paranoid that he needs to watch out too.

Personally I would have a quiet word with the teacher,

1.He needs to know someone is messing with equipment and in the real world that’s never a good idea as it normally ends in some poor sod in hospital or worse.

2.Be a better person, yes he’s being a fool but two fools make more than twice the trouble and if you and he start to escalate it god knows where it would end?

Get in the habit of making a discreet mark on your settings and check before use, it’s a good habit to develop anyway as any shared equipment is prone to adjustment.

Getting back at the guy just escalates things to the point where eventually it will get violent. This is a class control problem and it's up to the teacher to handle it. If he can't then he shouldn't be in charge of a welding shop which has the potential (I assume you have oxy/acetylene and other gas bottles there) to blow the whole school up.

If your teacher can't handle the problem, go see the principal.

What kind of school is it? College, high school?

As said retaliation is almost certainly going to lead to escalation. If the guy's got a sense a humour then sooner or later (after cover lenses have been coloured in with black permanant marker, headbands have been 'baited' with dyechem/dye penetrant etc) someones going to end up welding tools to the bench/welding toolboxes shut etc. followed by a sense of humour bypass and claret will be spilled and/or someone will get kicked out. If he's an ass without a sense of humour (can dish it out but can't take it) then more likely to jump straight to someone getting thumped and/or kicked out...

If this is nothing more than humorous banter then get used to it, it happens in every workplace. If on the other hand you feel that the guy is acting maliciously then grow a pair of balls.

Welding gear should'nt be played around with, I never did it, ehmm, you could try slipping a wire brush cup off an angle grinder on his chair when he's about to sit beside you. See how long it takes for him to get up again

We did the same things in welding class...believe me i know what it's like, i'm a girl!!!
Lol, we even do it now on the shop floor...

Don't let them get to you, just annoy them back! change their machine settings (be sure to write down your own settings!) close the gas valve etc!
And practise, that'll show them you can do it! Steady hands don't come at once, when you get more experience slowly your hands become steadier...(and go easy on the booze when you have to weld the day after the party! lol)

As said, these kind of practical jokes can get out of hand, and rightly or wrongly it goes on all the time in the workplace, opening the wire feed rollers in the mig set when the welder back is turned etc.... A very annoying thing that sometimes happens when TIG welding is someone treading on the gas hose every time they walk past Although it has to be said that when you're on the job, if you do something whilst the person is "mid weld" you'll most likely get twatted.

Don't mess with someone whilst they're welding! That is not done!
AND VERY IMPORTANT!! don't mess with a welders auto darkening mask!!! Touch the bucket and you will die.... (lol at least....that is what i tell my apprentices...)

Hi All!

As has been mentioned, A piece of s/s wire substituted for a Tungsten can go a long way! Not that I'd ever endorse this as a means of retaliation! Black marker on the inside lens of the welding screen can also work! Depending on machine, removal of micro fuses at rear of machine can also lead to to some interesting effects!

Once i almost took a swing at a guy cos he wanted to be funny and kicked my helmet out of my hands....
When he saw my reaction he realised it wasn't funny so he made off...luckily! lol

A good one with the mask is to cut an insulting word in to a piece of black paper the same size as the glass and put it between the shade and the plastic cover,once they arc up all that can be seen is the said word
Unfortunatly only works on the old flip down masks
