I have a 6lb and a 14lb. I use the 6lb for pegs and the 14lb for breaking/splitting logs with the wedge. Serious power! I love it. Got it for $20, it’s an old Brades and the handle is good too.
As said before, an air gap can help innumerably. I used it to split 1-2ft thick old man pine rings which had been submerged in a swamp for two years after felling. Very heavy and absolutely sodden - when the axe hit it, water would spurt out! Ended up supporting two ends and using a wedge and hammer to crack them in two again and again. Took three months to dry it out and burnt so hot!
