Slate Sealer

Hi all , a question for the illuminati , Ineed to seal some slate around my newly installed wood burner ,ie the hearth and side slips less than a square yard, it needs to be a matt finish , any recommendations please , all the ads say they are the best in the world , chaps on here are more real ,

When I was younger and dafter than I am today I spent a fair bit of time in Brazil. There were no parental filters back then. You could hire as many as you wanted or thought you needed!

Linseed oil does a good job of sealing slate. Easy to apply and it lasts

Most slates I've tried to seal have been pretty impermeable. Not exactly waterproof but nowhere near the absorbancy of, say, terracotta. Have tried LTP mattstone. Really useful to seal before grouting.

On slate, it goes quite a long way, again, low permeability. And does make water bead off for a while. Leaves a slight finish which, especially if you over apply, will pick up ash on a hearth for a while.

I've stopped bothering for the last X years, come to the conclusion there'll always be ash outside the woodburner and if I require a better finish than a dustpan and brush, a damp cloth smartens it up. Same with the slate flags in porch; foot traffic polishes off any marks that get left and a brush/cloth tidies it up. One less product to buy. Hard to have that attitude on a newly laid, mint slab of slate though!

even in later years it comes in handy when you can see that a wood stove has been used on that flag
